Seismic Upgrade of 251 South Lake Avenue Building
Pasadena, CA, USA
Savings: More than 50% over conventional.
The ten-story office building, with four levels of underground parking, was built in 1970. The concrete frame structure, except first story, is clad with architectural precast concrete panels. Moment frames provided lateral resistance to the structure.
Seismic upgrade of the structure was undertaken primarily to control the drifts and limit secondary damage in the event of a major earthquake. This was easily achieved by incorporating Pall Friction Dampers in steel bracing. Friction Dampers of capacity up to 500 kip and stroke up to 12 inch have been used. Seismic upgrade was completed in 1998.
